WORKSHOP SESSION I – MONDAY, JUNE 30, 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM

Singing Bach - Rick Erickson. A practical workshop dealing with vocal issues and Bach performance (choral and solo). Will include artists from the Bach Choir.

Liturgical Drama: A Resource And Writing Workshop - BettyAnn Leeseberg-Lange. Finding season, text and topic appropriate dramas for inclusion in worship. Hiring liturgical drama troupes and financing them; creating congregational troupes and writing scripts for your congregation.

Organ Masterclass—Icons for Worship - John Ferguson. John Ferguson will coach area organ students in repertoire drawn from the master composers for organ as well as materials useful in service playing.

Jazz, Tango and Gospel: New Sounds for the Liturgy - Kevin Anderson. Explore piano-based liturgical music in African and Latin American musical styles. Learn piano and vocal techniques for leading congregational singing in these improvisatory musical styles.

Contemporary Music - Mark Glaeser. An overview of contemporary music resources, including liturgies, hymnody, choruses, and other musical offerings will be presented in a reading session format.

Built on a Rock: Giving Children a Sound Base - Jeanie Reed. New and time-tested children’s choir repertoire, games and practical teaching techniques will be presented in this fast-paced workshop

Homiletics Track - Thomas H. Troeger. Keep in Touch: We will use art, poetry, music, scripture and prayer to identify anew the spiritual wells that feed our most vital preaching.

Beginning a Handbell Ensemble - Herb Geisler. What is needed to begin an effective handbell program in church or school? This is a whirlwind tour exploring the fundamentals of organization, materials and leadership skills.

Bach Performance Practice Track - Karl Hochreither. Reconciling Historic Understanding with Modern Practice. From theoretical consideration to performance practice. Remarks regarding performance: Dynamics - Tempo - Ornamentation, articulation, and manner of playing. The concept of affect. The interrelation between vocal and instrumental elements. Baroque playing practices and notational peculiarities.

A Musician's Guide to Renewing Worship - Cheryl Dieter. This workshop will discuss how church musicians can participate in and be catalysts for renewal of worship in their congregations.

 


WORKSHOP SESSION II - MONDAY, JUNE 30, 3:15 PM – 4:15 PM

Beginning Conducting - Brad Ellingboe. We will deal with basics of beat pattern, stance, baton vs. no baton and, most importantly, what your singers need from you.

Large Instrumental Ensembles in Worship - Dale Elmshaeuser. Using the Symphonic Winds of St. Martin's Lutheran Church in Austin, Texas as a basis, Dale will present topics from among the following: the rationale for such ensembles, recruiting, instrumental requirements, space requirements, service planning, literature, preparation of individuals' sheet music, distribution of instrumental parts, efficient rehearsal planning, score preparation, and conducting techniques.

The St. Olaf Choral Tradition - Icon and Example - John Ferguson. John Ferguson will explore his understanding of the evolution of the St. Olaf choral tradition. Particular emphasis will be placed upon concepts and practices that can be helpful to the life of the church choir director. Issues addressed will include building choral tone, seating of singers and developing a sense of the mission and identity for the choral ensemble.

Do It Yourself – Arranging Hymntunes for the Piano - Anne Krentz Organ. Participants will be led through the compositional process as they are invited to collaborate with the presenter to create a hymntune arrangement.

Mary Magdalene: Post-Crucifixion, Pre-Resurrection - BettyAnn Leeseberg-Lange. Performance of a 20 minute one-woman liturgical drama, originally written for Good Friday, now used for Lenten Services and Grief Workshops across the country. Discussion to Follow.

Teaching Music to Children—Not Just Songs - C. Michael Hawn. An introduction to Kodály methodology for use in church children's choir settings. Will introduce the Stepping Stones Curriculum by Choristers Guild, edited by Michael Hawn.

Homiletics Track - Thomas H. Troeger. All of Us for All of God: We will draw upon theories of how people perceive and respond in order to engage their whole being with the Word of God.

Developing Handbell Musicianship - Herb Geisler. Stand on both sides of the handbell table and examine the interaction of ringer and director; learn to cultivate the sensitivities of the handbell ringer by taking turns with fellow directors ringing portions of selected literature and testing your leadership skills. Each session (Session II on Monday, Session III on Tuesday) uses different musical material; come to either or both.

Bach Performance Practice Track - Karl Hochreither. Reconciling Historic Understanding with Modern Practice. From theoretical consideration to performance practice. Proportionality of performance forces. The vocal concerto principle. The chorale.

Living Stones of Local Global Outreach - Bishop Stephen Bouman. This workshop will explore worship and evangelism from the perspective of a synod which worships God in 23 languages.

 


WORKSHOP SESSION III - TUESDAY, JULY 1, 10:30 AM – 11:30 AM

Choral Rehearsal Technic - Professional/Church Choirs - What's the Difference? - David Cherwien. Presented by David Cherwien, who rehearses the National Lutheran Choir and for the past 20 years has conducted various church choirs. How are these different, or are they? Issues, tactics and examples will be explored with demonstrations by the National Lutheran Choir. Complimentary copies of music from the National Lutheran Choir series with Morningstar will be used.

Youth Instrumentalists in Music Ministry - Janet Kings. Come and share the reasons and resources, the practicalities and pitfalls of using elementary, junior high, and high school instrumentalists in music ministry at you church.

Choral Reading Session - Multi Publisher. Choral music for children from multiple publishers.

Living Stones Worship Overview - Thomas Pavlechko. ALCM Worship Chair Thomas Pavlechko explains the principals and challenges behind the planning of worship for ALCM San Diego, and offers tips for effective worship planning when conferees get back home. Pavlechko’s innovations in worship promise “something for everyone,” from small to large music programs.

Beginning Contemporary Music - Mark Glaeser. Where and how does the classically trained musician venture into the unfamiliar world of contemporary music for worship? "Worship Band 101" will include conversation about assembling an ensemble and what to do with them once they are assembled.

Round Table Talk with St. Cecilia - Kate Adelman and Ron Koch. You've got problems; St. Cecilia has answers. Bring your problems and frustrations to this skillshop for advice dialogue, and counsel on what to do.

Homiletics Track - Thomas H. Troeger. Experiments in Preaching: We will experience and analyze brief sermons that draw on the spiritual practices and theories of workshops I and II.

Bigger Is Not Always Better . . . Scott Weidler. ... especially in matters of ministry, faith, and formation. Through experience with the Episcopal/ELCA Leadership Program for Musicians Serving Small Congregations, the experience of music ministers in small, especially rural, congregations will be explored.

 


WORKSHOP SESSION IV - TUESDAY, JULY 1, 2:15 PM – 3:15 PM

Conversation with Kate - Kathryn Koob. This is an opportunity to talk with Kate about her experiences and how she developed her love of music.

Multicultural Organ Literature - What Can We Do With It? - Lorraine Brugh. This workshop will explore music written for the organ which is based on global hymnody. Included will be suggestions for registration and performance practice. Unique features of this genre of organ literature and its use for this literature will also be featured.

Voice Preservation and Enhancement Workshop for Pastors - BettyAnn Leeseberg-Lange. As Pastors are professional voice users, the need for knowledge about the spoken voice, its health problems, usage problems and means of correction are important. A vocal warm-up, text exploration techniques and a bibliography of spoken voice enhancement will be provided.

Beginning On the Organ - Dan Miller.

Biblical Storytelling from the Heart - Dr. Philip and Rev. Lori Ruge-Jones. We will lead you in a method of internalizing Scripture to enrich Sunday worship through lively proclamation of God's word.

Singing Around the World - C. Michael Hawn. This workshop will introduce the global song collection, Halle, Halle: We Sing the World Round, edited by Michael Hawn by Choristers Guild.

Junior High Youth Choirs: Gateway to the Future - Erik Whitehill. Methods, music adaptation, composition, plus a repertoire packet for this pivotal time in the life of a child that helps ensure a future of song.

Homiletics Track - Thomas H. Troeger. The Word in Song: We will explore historic debates about the place of music in preaching and worship and the light they shed upon worship in the new millennium.

Choral Reading Session - Multi Publisher. Choral music for two-part mixed and SAB choirs from multiple publishers.

Bach Performance Practice Track - Karl Hochreither.
Reconciling Historic Understanding with Modern Practice. From theoretical consideration to performance practice. The interrelationship between music and text demonstrated in some chorales, choruses and recitatives. The National Lutheran Choir will serve as the demonstration choir.
