Pentecostal Art Exhibit in Faith Gallery Features Paintings by Gaylord Walter
As the church calendar rolls from Easter into Pentecost, so follows the Faith Art Gallery!
With special thanks to long-time church member Lois Walter, the gallery is excited to exhibit the work of her talented husband Gaylord, who passed away in November 2017 at the age of 84. An extraordinary artist, Gaylord Walter’s work was dominated by explorations of the human face and form. This unique exhibit features two of Gaylord’s best-known works titled “Expressions,” which have been exhibited at the DuPage Art League in Wheaton and other local galleries. In these black and white pencil illustrations, Gaylord serves as his own model for a series of 24 artistic ruminations on the amazing expressivity of the human face. Gaylord’s playful, poignant, and thoughtful illustrations are truly a visual representation of the popular expression, “I can read you like a book!”
Two other large-scale works on display are vibrant, biblically themed masterpieces that Gaylord painted specifically for Faith Church at the request of former Senior Pastor Jim Honig. Titled Jesus Walking on the Water and The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost, they now are part of Faith’s permanent collection after generously being donated by Lois last fall. Be sure to study “Expressions” 1 & 2 on the right side of the gallery’s long wall before taking in the Jesus and Holy Spirit paintings. [CB1] [EE2] Do you detect a familiar visage in them?
Art was a major part of Gaylord’s life from the time he was a boy. According to his obituary on Legacy.com, growing up in rural Illinois Gaylord was inspired to draw the trains he loved to watch rumble through town. After earning art degrees from The Art Institute and the University of Chicago, Gaylord worked as an art director for Jewel Food Stores for 10 years before leaving to start his own business called Cottage Hill Wildlife Art, which published prints for talented wildlife artists. The last 20 years of his career were spent as an art director at Sears Roebuck and Company. Upon his retirement in 1994, Gaylord strove to refine his talents as a figurative artist, taking classes at the College of DuPage and coordinating the Figure Drawing Workshop on Saturdays at the DuPage Art League.
Please enjoy the artistry of Gaylord Walter, one of Faith Church’s most uniquely gifted talents, now on display through July in the Faith Art Gallery.
